THE COMIC SECTION FAMILY IS GETTING BACK TOGETHER!

Welcome to The Comic Section Podcast Issue #406, where Jason and Shawn welcome back a familiar voice!

Our former co-host Ant makes his triumphant return to the podcast, and we've got plenty to discuss.

This week's episode features major video game adaptation news, Hollywood's worldwide box-office recovery, upcoming movie trailers, and three reviews from Ant himself.

From Donald Glover bringing PUBG to Netflix to A24 reportedly investing nearly $200 million in an Elden Ring movie, the entertainment industry continues to find new ways to bring gaming franchises to the screen.

But first, we remember two performers whose contributions to entertainment will never be forgotten.

Remembering Eric Bauza and Sir Patrick Stewart

We begin Issue #406 by paying tribute to Eric Bauza and Sir Patrick Stewart.

Bauza, the award-winning voice actor best known for portraying beloved Looney Tunes characters including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Porky Pig, passed away at the age of 46.

His remarkable career included hundreds of voice-acting credits across animation, television, film, and video games.

Bauza's talent helped preserve the legacy of characters that generations of audiences have loved.

We also remember legendary British actor Sir Patrick Stewart, who passed away at the age of 86.

For science-fiction fans, Stewart will forever be associated with Captain Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

For comic book movie fans, his portrayal of Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise helped define an era of superhero cinema.

Both performers made lasting contributions to the worlds of animation, science fiction, and popular culture.

We extend our condolences to their families, friends, and fans.

Donald Glover Is Bringing PUBG to Netflix

One of the most surprising entertainment announcements of the week involves Donald Glover and the massively popular video game PUBG: Battlegrounds.

Netflix is developing a live-action series based on the battle royale franchise, with Glover attached to star, write, direct, and executive-produce.

His brother and frequent collaborator, Stephen Glover, will also serve as a writer and executive producer.

The announcement is especially interesting because PUBG doesn't have the type of traditional storyline that audiences might expect from a video game adaptation.

Originally released in 2017, the game places players in a competitive survival environment where they must find equipment, eliminate opponents, and become the last person standing.

That straightforward premise offers considerable creative freedom.

Rather than recreating an established narrative, the Glover brothers could develop entirely new characters, relationships, and conflicts within the game's battle royale framework.

Donald Glover's previous work on Atlanta demonstrated his ability to combine drama, humor, unexpected storytelling, and social commentary.

Could those creative strengths help distinguish PUBG from other video game adaptations?

Or will audiences expect something closer to a traditional action-survival series?

Jason, Shawn, and Ant discuss the possibilities.

A24's Elden Ring Movie Could Cost Nearly $200 Million

A24 is preparing to take one of its biggest financial risks yet.

The studio's upcoming adaptation of Elden Ring, the acclaimed fantasy action role-playing game, is reportedly being developed with a budget between $175 million and $200 million.

That would represent an extraordinary investment for a company that built much of its reputation on distinctive independent films.

The project, which has Kit Connor attached to star, is shaping up to be a major Hollywood production.

But adapting Elden Ring presents a unique challenge.

The game is famous for its enormous fantasy world, mysterious storytelling, memorable creatures, and challenging combat.

Much of its narrative is discovered indirectly through exploration, environmental details, and interactions with characters.

How do filmmakers translate that experience into a traditional movie?

Will the adaptation follow a recognizable hero's journey?

Can it capture the atmosphere of the Lands Between without losing the mystery that makes the game special?

And can a reported $200 million investment pay off?

We discuss whether A24's creative approach could make this one of the most interesting video game movies in development.

The Worldwide Box Office Could Reach $35.7 Billion in 2026

Despite years of concern about the future of movie theaters, the global box office is showing signs of improvement.

According to a revised forecast from Gower Street Analytics, worldwide theatrical revenue could reach approximately $35.7 billion in 2026.

If achieved, that would represent the strongest worldwide box-office performance since 2019.

The forecast includes approximately $10.5 billion from North America, $19.7 billion from international markets outside China, and $5.5 billion from China.

Major blockbuster franchises have helped drive attendance, but horror films and other genre releases have also contributed to the year's theatrical performance.

That raises some important questions.

Are audiences returning to theaters because Hollywood is delivering more appealing movies?

Do blockbuster franchises remain essential to theatrical success?

Can original films compete in a market dominated by familiar properties?

And what does the continued growth of streaming mean for movie theaters?

The Comic Section crew discusses whether Hollywood is experiencing a genuine recovery or simply enjoying a particularly successful year.

Trailer Reactions: Jumanji, Dune 3 and The Hunchback

Our Coming Soon/Preview segment features three very different projects.

Jumanji: Open World 2

We're heading back into the world of Jumanji with a look at Jumanji: Open World 2.

The franchise's blend of adventure, humor, and video game-inspired storytelling gives us plenty to discuss.

Dune: Part Three

Next, we're checking out the final trailer for Dune: Part Three.

After the success of the previous films, anticipation remains high for the next chapter of the science-fiction saga.

Can the next installment deliver another memorable cinematic experience?

The Hunchback: Soul of Paris

Finally, we preview The Hunchback: Soul of Paris, offering our impressions of the upcoming project.

Which trailer left the strongest impression?

Tune in to hear our reactions.

Ant Returns With Three Reviews!

Our Review segment is especially interesting this week because Ant is back with three projects to discuss.

Your Mother, Your Mother, Your Mother

Ant gives his thoughts on Your Mother, Your Mother, Your Mother.

Jason previously reviewed the project, so we're getting another perspective from a familiar Comic Section voice.

Street Fighter

Next, Ant reviews Street Fighter.

Video game adaptations have become an increasingly important part of Hollywood, but fighting-game movies have historically faced challenges when translating their characters and action to the screen.

Does this latest adaptation capture what makes Street Fighter special?

Ant shares his perspective.

You Can See Everything

Finally, Ant reviews You Can See Everything, giving listeners another reason to check out the episode.

Whether his opinions match Jason and Shawn's or spark some disagreements, we're glad to have Ant back for the conversation.

Why Ant's Return Matters

One of the things that makes The Comic Section Podcast special is the chemistry between the people behind the microphones.

Over the years, the show has brought together friends, guests, and passionate fans of comics, movies, television, anime, and video games.

Ant has been part of that history.

Having him return for Issue #406 is an opportunity to reconnect, revisit familiar conversations, and bring some of that classic Comic Section energy back to the show.

And with major stories like PUBG, Elden Ring, and Hollywood's box-office recovery on the table, there's plenty to debate.

PUBG or Elden Ring: Which Adaptation Has More Potential?

That's our biggest question for Issue #406.

Donald Glover's PUBG series has the advantage of an accomplished creative team and a premise that allows for original storytelling.

Meanwhile, A24's Elden Ring movie has a beloved fantasy universe, a potentially enormous production budget, and passionate fans who will have high expectations.

Which project has the greater chance of success?

We want to hear from you!
