Transformers/G.I. Joe Crossover Canceled, 24 Jump Street Returns & Miami Vice ’85 Adds Walton Goggins
The Comic Section Podcast is back with Issue #402, and this week we're joined by a special guest host: The Magnificent T-Daddy!
Jason's former radio colleague joins Jason and Shawn for a packed episode featuring Hollywood news, trailer reactions, reviews and some important advice before The Comic Section heads to New York Comic Con.
We begin the episode, however, by remembering a familiar face to generations of television fans.
Remembering Dennis Haskins
We send our condolences to the family, friends and fans of Dennis Haskins, best known for portraying Principal Richard Belding in Saved by the Bell.
Haskins' history with the character stretched beyond the original series. He portrayed Belding in Good Morning, Miss Bliss before becoming a major part of Saved by the Bell and later returning for Saved by the Bell: The New Class.
For a generation who grew up with the students of Bayside High, Mr. Belding became one of television's most recognizable principals.
We remember his work and legacy on Issue #402.
Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery Become Skydance
The combined Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery entertainment company has a new name:
Skydance.
The name comes from David Ellison's original Skydance Media company and will represent an enormous collection of film, television, streaming and entertainment brands.
The combination puts franchises and brands ranging from DC, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones to Mission: Impossible, Top Gun, Yellowstone and Nickelodeon within the same larger entertainment company.
Beyond the size of the merger, we're discussing what consolidation of this scale could mean for the entertainment industry.
Transformers/G.I. Joe Crossover Movie Is Canceled
The crossover many fans thought was finally happening is no longer moving forward.
The ending of 2023's Transformers: Rise of the Beasts directly teased a connection between the Transformers universe and G.I. Joe.
The plan appeared to be leading toward a massive theatrical crossover between two franchises that became icons of 1980s toy culture.
Now those plans have changed.
Instead, G.I. Joe is moving toward another standalone movie while Transformers continues separately.
Was that the right decision?
G.I. Joe has struggled to find consistent success on the big screen, while Transformers has already gone through multiple creative eras.
Perhaps both properties need to strengthen their individual identities before attempting a crossover.
Or perhaps Hollywood just walked away from the exact kind of ridiculous blockbuster spectacle audiences would've paid to see.
We debate it.
24 Jump Street Is Finally Happening
Schmidt and Jenko are getting another assignment.
Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are returning for 24 Jump Street, with Ice Cube also coming back.
The franchise has been dormant since 22 Jump Street, despite years of discussions about potential sequels and even an abandoned crossover with Men in Black.
Now the buddy-cop comedy is officially returning.
The question is whether the chemistry and self-aware comedy that made the first two movies successful can still work more than a decade later.
And yes...
We also need somebody to explain what happened to 23 Jump Street.
Walton Goggins Joins Miami Vice ’85
Joseph Kosinski's Miami Vice ’85 continues assembling one of Hollywood's most interesting casts.
Walton Goggins has joined a lineup that already features Michael B. Jordan, Austin Butler, John Leguizamo, Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone and Danny Ramirez.
The new movie will explore the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami while drawing inspiration from the landmark television series.
With Kosinski directing and the film being developed as an IMAX theatrical experience, Miami Vice ’85 is increasingly looking like a major event movie.
